Microsoft has announced the integration of artificial intelligence directly into the core of Windows 11’s File Explorer. Rolled out as part of the October 2025 update, this change represents a shift in how users interact with files, combining routine file management with real-time AI capabilities.
Image Editing from the Right-Click Menu
One of the most prominent updates is the addition of an “AI Actions” feature in the right-click context menu for image files. Users working with standard formats such as .jpg, .jpeg, and .png can now access tools to blur backgrounds, erase unwanted objects, or remove backgrounds entirely—without opening a dedicated photo editing application.
Additionally, a new “Visual Search” option allows users to use an image as the basis for an AI-powered web search. This function provides quick access to visually similar content or information about the image’s contents.
Integrated Document Summaries via Microsoft 365
For users with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, documents stored in OneDrive or SharePoint can now be summarized using built-in AI. This allows users to preview the contents of Word or Excel files without opening them, offering time-saving benefits for those handling large volumes of documents.
This functionality is part of Microsoft’s broader Copilot initiative and is currently limited to eligible subscribers.
Direct Copilot Access Within File Explorer
Microsoft has also embedded an “Ask Copilot” option into the File Explorer interface. This enables users to invoke the AI assistant on a file-by-file basis—asking for metadata, recommended actions, or deeper insight into a document or image.
Limited Rollout and Insider Access
These new features are being released first to users in the Windows Insider Program, specifically in the Dev and Canary channels. A general release is expected once feedback is incorporated and stability is confirmed.
A new privacy section under Windows settings—“Privacy & Security > Text and Image Generation”—allows users to monitor which apps have accessed AI capabilities and control their data usage accordingly.
A Broader Shift in Productivity Design
The inclusion of AI tools in File Explorer signals Microsoft’s continued investment in making core system features more intelligent. Rather than treat AI as an add-on, the company appears committed to making it a foundational aspect of the Windows user experience.
For many professionals, this means faster workflows, fewer application switches, and smarter tools embedded directly into daily tasks. Whether for creative work, business productivity, or general file management, this update represents a deliberate step toward integrating AI across all layers of the Windows environment.
As Windows continues to evolve, these AI enhancements could serve as a preview of broader system-level intelligence becoming standard across the OS.
