Dubsmash Takes Over Social Media

Dubsmash

Dubsmash is taking lip syncing to a new level by allowing users to make short videos of themselves together with their favourite songs, commercials, movie quotes or sound clips.

Have you ever wanted to send a message to someone mimicking the style and tone of someone else’s voice to convey your message?  If yes, then you will enjoy Dubsmash.

The app has created a whole new level of selfies, dubbed “velfies”, where users create funny videos and share them with friends on social media platforms and websites.  Videos of celebrities using the app have made their way across the internet, such as one of Hugh Jackman doing an impersonation of Alan Rickman in Die Hard.

There are videos of animals, babies and other amusing audio-video mismatches.  There are also websites dedicated to the funniest Dubsmash compilations and spin-off apps which are also seeing a lot of success.

The video selfie app doesn’t require any logins.  You can get going immediately.  However, users do receive more customization tools after entering in their information and creating an account, making it quicker and easier to view and share videos.

The app allows users to search for their preferred category, then select a sound and make a video.  It can be used for solo amusement but it is the sharing of these videos that is making the app so popular.

The app doesn’t record any audio and it allows you to re-record videos as many times as you want until you get it right.  When you are finished recording, you can also add text, emojis or props that will stick to your face as it moves around.

Dubsmash was founded by Jonas Dreuppel, Roland Grenke, and Daniel Taschik.  The app was launched on the 19th of November 2014 and has been downloaded over 20 million times since then, placing it in the top charts over the last few weeks.  The app is used in over 192 countries and is free to download for iOS and Android devices.

Dubsmash has proved successful, but only time will tell if the trend will just fade away or if it will turn into the next hot buzzword and a social media staple of the future.
