And Now for the News : South Africa’s Top 3 News Sites

newspaper coffee

In a digital age we all want information now, instantly, while we have a few seconds to spare. This has driven us to be so information hungry, that reading a newspaper tomorrow morning is really old news. Digital news channels are all the rage, and today I’m going to show you my top 3.

In no particular order:

3. Mail & Guardian
This news website has grown quite a following in SA, and it’s probably because of their no nonsense reporting style, and willingness to report on pretty much any given issue locally and abroad. Sometimes the articles tend to be opinionated, but that shows strings views, which we need more of in the news.

2. EWN
Overall a very catchy acronym for a news website, EWN stands for Eye Witness News. Smart hey? Besides that though, they report on a wide variety of topics, have a lot of international reach with reporters in almost every sector and country, and are affiliated with several radio stations. They also have great traffic reports and take input from listeners and readers. Another great point is that they work hand in hand with anonymous tip-offs to catch criminals in the act.

1. News24
The titan of South African news sites. By far the largest website in SA by page views, site visits and unique visitors. With dedicated channels to breaking news, business news, and high profile issues worldwide, the website provides a lot of information, that’s written well. Owned by SA tech giant Naspers, they have a lot of funding and access to good experience and business know how.

All 3 websites have intuitive easy layouts and have mobile optimised pages, which cater to a vast segment of the market. All 3 are great sites and come down to a choice of personal preference. M&G has some very interesting articles that’s barely related to news, whereas EWN has lots of input from people, which is often amiss. News24 has a comments section that quite often gets out of hand. Either way, as long as you have your pick, you will be able to get your information fix for the day.
